Essential oils are very powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals. Free radicals are atoms with at least one unpaired electron and are created naturally buy the body during metabolism. The body uses free radicals to perform important roles in gene transcription, cell signaling, and other regulatory functions.
The problem is when free radicals outnumber the body’s natural antioxidants. Exposure to environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, and cigarette smoke can also create free radicals. This imbalance leads to cell injury and death.
If a free radical is not properly managed, it can cause a chain reaction by creating even more free radicals out of normal atoms. This sequences leads to damage to proteins, DNA, and tissue, as well as the triggering of a number of human diseases. Essential oils, omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, and certain vitamins have been shown to act as inhibitors of free radical generation and can help diminish oxidative stress and harmful free radical production, helping the body fight disease and damage.
That’s good news, I think! Right? As you use your oils on a daily basis, besides the benefit of feeling more energized, more comfortable… this is all going on “behind the scenes”. I want to keep my cells happy, don't you?
Free radicals are molecules with an unpaired electron which travel throughout the body's systems and "steal" electrons from healthy cells, damaging them in the process. Elevated free radical levels have been linked to many diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease and diabetes. They are also associated with accelerated aging
