Essential oils are very powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals. Free radicals are atoms with at least one unpaired electron and are created naturally buy the body during metabolism. The body uses free radicals to perform important roles in gene transcription, cell signaling, and other regulatory functions.
The problem is when free radicals outnumber the body’s natural antioxidants. Exposure to environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, and cigarette smoke can also create free radicals. This imbalance leads to cell injury and death.
If a free radical is not properly managed, it can cause a chain reaction by creating even more free radicals out of normal atoms.
